The word dendrite refers to the tree-like pattern in the the stone. Dendritic opal is a common opal, meaning is has no bright colour, light play (fire) in the stone. It is also called "mossy opal" due to the fern-like/moss inclusions.
The dark patterning against white surface is said to represent balance of opposites in more modern day symbolism.
